Kitsap Farmers Markets Now Open

Join the forum discussion on this post

Most of our local Farmers Markets in Kitsap County have now started up for the season and the ones that haven’t yet, will soon be open.  Farmers Markets are a wonderful place to shop for plants during April and May.  There are many small growers in Kitsap county that sell only through the Farmers Markets, selling everything from vegetable seedlings to trees to special perennials.  The prices are usually a bargain, compared to shopping at the local large Garden Centers and sometimes even better that the Big Box stores like Walmart or Home Depot.

Many Farmers sell their extra vegetable starts and you can find some really unique varieties.  Unlike the local nurseries, who all get their vegetable starts from a handful of large growers, that grow a limited number of varieties, the farmers who grow starts will offer a much wider choice.  They try to grow interesting and unusual vegetables for their produce customers in the summer, so their plants are frequently the hottest and newest varieties available or gourmet, unusually colored varieties.  Many of them use Territorial Seeds, so these plants are meant to bear crops well in the Pacific Northwest.

Gardening Message Board for Westsound Gardeners

This week, I added a new feature to Westsound Gardener:  a message board!  I wanted a place where people could post and get answers to their gardening questions, find something they are looking for locally, and connect with other Kitsap gardeners.

Through this venue, I’m offering free gardening advice to your specific garden questions.  I have also

Garden Open This Weekend at Sundquist Nursery

One of my favorite local growers, Sundquist Nursery, is having their first 2010 “garden opens” this weekend.  This is a small nursery that is normally open by appointment only, except for a handful of days, during the season.  They will be open on Friday and Saturday, April 9 and 10, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

New Photo Gallery of 2009 Garden Highlights

I have added a new photo gallery of the best from my yard and garden last summer. I had cleared a planting area out, beside my driveway, which is fairly small – a 25 foot long triangle shaped area that is 18′ at the wide end and 8′ at the narrow end. This area gets lots

The Colors and Fragrance of Spring

Forsythia and Quince in Spring Bloom

I know that the traditional colors of spring are all soft pastels. However, when the garden starts to wake up, I personally prefer a super punch of color, to kick of the growing season. I love bright red tulips and strong yellow daffodils, but I have trouble getting tulips established,

The Beautiful Black Leaved Tuxedo® Ceanothus

Black Leaved Tuxedo Ceanothus

My daughter brought me one of these new, exciting and fun plants from the Seattle side of the water last week.  I couldn’t believe it was a Ceanothus!  It’s a newer Ceanothus from Fitzgerald Nurseries and is, of course patented and trademarked, so it may be a bit hard to get for a

Kitsap Gardeners Love an El Niño Spring

I hope all the Kitsap gardeners are enjoying this wonderful, mild, and early spring we are having.  I’m already way ahead of schedule in my early season garden chores and itching to plant.  However, I’m keeping a sharp eye on the thermometer at night, in case I need to put a little heat in the greenhousefor the brugmansias, cannas, and echevarias. Northwest Garden Show 2010

Every year, hundreds of Northwesterners consider this huge show to be the kick-off of the gardening season.  I have been going to this on an almost annual basis for the past 15 years.  I did miss last year, due to work and it was rumored it might be the last garden show at the time.  Fortunately,
